'Exquisite Corpse' Pop-up Exhibition Culture Night 2014

'Exquisite Corpse' was a two person pop-up exhibition for Culture Night 2014.  The exhibition takes its name from the Surrealist game 'Exquisite Corpse', a method by which a collection of words or images are collectively assembled.

Pauline and I used the 'exquisite corpse' method to create over 40 drawings in mixed media.  We also exhibited a selection of our own individual work.

Collaboration with Bon

A few months ago I received a message from Bon, a Roscommon based graffiti artist, asking if I would be interested in collaborating with him on a piece.  I jumped at the opportunity,  graffiti is an artform I've always admired and the chance to combine my watercolours and his stencils was too good to pass up!   This is the result of our collaboration...

'The Perfect Beauty' at the Hawk's Well Theatre, August 2013

Earlier this year, I was approached to be part of 'The Perfect Beauty', an exhibition and performance event based on the poetry of W.B. Yeats for the Tread Softly festival.  10 artists and 10 musicians were given a poem as a basis for creating an artwork or musical composition.  The exhibition was held in the foyer of the Hawk's Well Theatre, Sligo, for the month of August and on 7th August the theatre hosted a multi-media event featuring live performances of the music, readings of the poems and projections of the accompanying artworks.

The poem I selected was an early Yeats poem called 'The Cloak, the Boat and the Shoes,' from the volume of poetry, 'Crossways'.

The Cloak, the Boat and the Shoes
                                     - W.B. Yeats
"What do you make so fair and bright?'
"I make the cloak of Sorrow:
O lovely to see in all men's sight
Shall be the cloak of Sorrow,
In all men's sight.'
"What do you build with sails for flight?'
"I build a boat for Sorrow:
O swift on the seas all day and night
Saileth the rover Sorrow,
All day and night.'
What do you weave with wool so white?'
"I weave the shoes of Sorrow:
Soundless shall be the footfall light
In all men's ears of Sorrow,
Sudden and light.'

UNKNOWN PR, opening this Friday at 7pm!

UNKNOWN opens this Friday at 7pm in the Yeats Gallery, Hyde Bridge, Sligo, and runs until April 26th. Hope you can make it!  Thanks to Sandra Vernon for doing the PR below.

“UNKNOWN” @ THE YEATS An exciting exhibition by two artists, Pauline Terry and Amy McGovern will open on Friday 12th April at 7pm at the Yeats Gallery, Sligo . This exhibition is the result of two artists meeting at Sligo IT and finding that their creativity and thought processes worked well together, in spite of coming from different cultures. They both graduated in 2011 with BA Hons in Fine Art . Now they share a studio and have decided to create “Unknown” an exhibition of their paintings and drawings. Pauline Terry is originally from England, where her profession was restoring antiques, but she always had a longing to study art. Coming to Ireland on holiday she was captivated by the country and stayed. She was accepted by Sligo IT where she was able to fulfil her dream . To quote from her artists statement “ my work in this series is inspired by a collection of found images and patterns. By juxtaposing these element s together, which are seemingly unrelated, creates a clash of the unexpected” Paulines process is mixed media where images are either added directly to the painting or painted in. She then layers paint over the image, which in turn can create a whole new dimension to the work in an instant. “…when making a painting the process is just as important to me as the final outcome” Paulines work is bold, vibrant and fascinating, one could spend a long time just looking at one of the 10 pieces she will be exhibiting. Amy McGovern, on the other hand , was born in Sligo, and is still there where there is plenty of inspiration for her work. To quote “My work in this exhibition explores the public and political expression of modern society; the creative space between urban decay and the illusion of cyber space. We choose to ignore that which stares back at us, in decline and decay, in favour of the bright new shiny world wide web…..each flake of rust or rip of wallpaper echoes our loss. The vision is one of respect, to touch, taste, feel and remember where we came from and where we are. This is the stuff of which we are made” Amys delicate drawings and paintings on old invoices, wallpaper, remnants of the buildings past, speak volumes about present society. Not only are they thought provoking but also each an individually attractive piece of art. The exhibition runs until 26th April, for any further information please contact Pauline at donovanterry@eircom.net or Amy on www.facebook.com/amymcgovernartist.
